History of Rockstar

Two brothers from England; Sam & Dan Hausser first got a job at BMG Interactive back in the 1990’s in an attempt to make a big impact in the music industry. This was after them always having a dream of becoming rock stars but soon realising they were going to have to go for a more realistic role in the music industry.

During their spell at BMG Interactive; Sam & Dan Hausser were eventually transferred to the game development department where they eventually found that they had a knack for developing games and also saw the potential for a free-roaming open-world game. This game would not give players specific objectives; but would instead allow players to make their own objectives and do whatever they wanted within the game. This game would become known as Grand Theft Auto.

Soon after Sam & Dan Hausser had been employed by BMG Interactive; a company known as Take-Two Interactive bought BMG Interactive and therefore took over the whole company. The game development department that Sam & Dan Hausser were currently working in was therefore to be renamed as a result of the takeover.  Sam & Dan Hausser were made heads of the department decided to call the new department Rockstar to pay homage to their original dream of being rock stars.

Grand Theft Auto was one of the first games released by Rockstar in October 1997 and was a massive hit (considering the size of the department at that point) selling just over a million copies worldwide. Grand Theft Auto II soon followed as it was an obviousy decision to make a sequal given the success of the first one. The game did just as well as the first one selling around a million copies worldwide and Rockstar was also bringing out other games that were all being successful such as Midnight Club, Max Payne, The Warriors, Bully, and Manhunt which were all fairly successful when they were released. However; Rockstar’s big breaktrough came in the form of Grand Theft Auto III which was a vast improvement on the previous two Grand Theft Auto games due to its new 3-Dimentional world. Grand Theft Auto III came to sell 17.5 milllion copies worldwide; blowing the previous two installments out the water and is currently regarded as one of the greatest PS2 games of all time. The release of this game catapulted Rockstar onto the map and the game development studio had successfully solidified itself as a major player in the gaming industry.

Today; Rockstar is one of the biggest and most controversial gaming development studios in the world. Some of Rockstars more recent hit games include Max Payne 3, Red Dead Redeption and L.A. Noire. However; none of these have compared to the success of 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V. Grand Theft Auto V is currently the most successful game ever made with it selling a total of 65 million copies worldwide, getting a 97% rating by Metacritic and also receving countless awards such as the Golden Joystick Award and a BAFTA.
